Who Will Play Shortstop on Opening Day 2027 for the Nats?
By Stephen "Ghost" Mears|November 7, 2026|mode_comment58

The Washington Nationals depth chart for shortstop is in flux right now. Manager Blake Butera was asked who his shortstop was going to be for the 2027 season, and he gave a fair answer without a firm commitment.
“We’re going to see what [CJ Abrams] looks like in Spring Training. I think what he’s shown us at second base, he’s been unbelievable over there. But he’s also been unbelievable at shortstop since we had that conversation, right? So I think that he’s absolutely earned an opportunity to continue to work at that this offseason, and if he plays shortstop the way that he did these last, whatever it is, six weeks or so, that’s a good shortstop.”
— manager Blake Butera said at the end of the season
In August, news broke that shortstop CJ Abrams would play some second base, where Toboni said he believed Abrams has Gold Glove potential. Abrams played 14 games at second base, and his OAA (outs above average) per Statcast was right at league average 0.0.
Abrams’ shortstop OAA was -17.0 and tied for the worst in baseball. To be honest, Nasim Nunez wasn’t much better as his OAA was a -5.0 with only 144 chances. Since OAA is a cumulative statistic, you have to look at the total chances. Abrams had 511 chances at shortstop. Extrapolate those numbers and Nunez’s defense was worse as that would be a -17.7 OAA.
Nunez was once considered as the short-term bridge to the heir …

Relief

Dan Quinn’s face after the victory on Sunday night tells a story. He’s hardly giddy. The win over Philadelphia has brought the slightest of reprieves. But, it was essential. The team didn’t get out of the hole entirely. It did start the climb out, however.
It was ugly early. The team couldn’t get out of their own way. In less than 10-minutes the team had committed 4-Offensive penalties; 3-pre-snap types and 1-Ineligible downfield. Then Jayden Daniels hit Chig Okonkwo with a pass only for the Tight End to fumble the ball away. Philadelphia would score on the ensuing possession. That’s a rough start in anyone’s book.
Can’t Stands No More
The rough start, and rough is not strong enough a word to describe it, snapped something in Jayden Daniels. He gathered the Offense on the sidelines so that he could read them the Riot Act. Not literally, of course. The Riot Act was officially titled “An Act for preventing tumults and riotous assemblies, and for the more speedy and effectual punishing the rioters” This was effected by Parliament in 1715 to quell uprisings against the Hanoverian King George 1. If read the Act the crowd of 12-or more was compelled to disperse or face stiff consequences. In modern parlance “Reading the Riot Act” is a polite society way of saying the assemblage was given a tongue lashing. That they were.

Washington would go on to have only 2-more Offensive penalties after that confab on the sidelines. After 4-penalties in 11-plays the team had only 2-penalties over 49-plays. They also went on to score 27-unanswered points. Coincidence? Hardly.

Wizards 2-game Win Streak Stopped as they fall to Jalen Johnson less Hawks 120-105
By Jordan Davis|November 4, 2026|mode_comment1

With the news that the Atlanta Hawks would be without their best player, Jalen Johnson, on Wednesday night, the Washington Wizards, coming off back-to-back wins, could have taken Head Coach Quin Snyder lightly.
Johnson’s absence not only leaves the Hawks without a reliable 20, 10, and 7 guy but also makes them much smaller, which the Wizards can attack with their size.
And attack they did, as 10-time All-Star Anthony Davis had an early 6 points with two jumpers from the wing and then a lob thrown by rookie sensation AJ Dybantsa to go up 8-3 early.
Despite not having Johnson, the Atlanta Hawks still had a group of very good scorers at guard and wing and took advantage early from deep. 3-pointers in the 1st from Nickell Alexander Walker, CJ McCollum, Onyeka Okongwu, Aaron Wiggins, and rookies Kingston Flemings, and Zuby Ejiofor made the fact that

Game #9: Terps Seeking a Breakthrough in West Lafayette
By Gabe Chiralsky|November 5, 2026|mode_comment3

The Maryland Terrapins travel to West Lafayette this Saturday to face the Purdue Boilermakers, searching for their first conference victory under interim head coach Aazaar Abdul-Rahim. Following a heartbreaking 20-17 loss to Illinois in Abdul-Rahim’s debut, the Terps look to inject maximum energy into their philosophy of “VTE”—Violence, Technique, and Effort on the road. Maryland really needs a win in the Abdul-Rahim era. The Terps are mired in a 6-game losing streak and need to find a way to win.
The Terrapins (2-6, 0-5 Big Ten) remain heavily reliant on their aerial connection. Quarterback Malik Washington has thrown for 1,805 yards and 9 touchdowns on the season, leaning heavily on breakout wide receiver Chris Durr Jr. He paces the Maryland offense with 58 receptions for 638 yards and 4 scores, continuing his chase toward rewriting the school record books. On the ground, DeJuan Williams remains the primary engine, racking

Washington Mystics Season Ended in a Postseason Loss
By DC Sports|October 10, 2026
The Washington Mystics season ended in a Best-of-3 playoff sweep to the Atlanta Dream on Sept. 30 at the CareFirst Arena in Washington, D.C., ending the Mystics' season too quickly. Entering the postseason as the No. 5 seed, the Mystics made their first playoff appearance since 2019. Coached by Sydney Johnson, the roster was recognized as the youngest playoff team in WNBA history.
Overall, this was an encouraging season as this young team stepped up big time to become a Top-5 team in the league. We saw center Shakira Austin emerge and complement forward Kiki Iriafen. Guard Sonia Citron tied Austin at 16.8 points per game for the team lead. The depth went beyond this core of three players. They need to add another key piece to become an annual contender.

The match represents the 34th and final game of the campaign for both clubs on what promises to be a high-stakes MLS Decision Day across the league.
Entering the final weekend with a 7-14-12 record (33 points), Head Coach René Weiler’s Black-and-Red squad is out of playoff contention but aims to finish the year on a high note in front of the home crowd. D.C. United looks to bounce back from a tough 3-0 road loss against the Columbus Crew and replicate the success of their previous meeting with NYCFC, which resulted in a 2-0 victory at Citi Field back in May. Meanwhile, New York City FC (9-12-12, 39 points) arrives in the District fighting to solidify their postseason positioning, led…

By Gabe C|October 5, 2026|mode_comment3

Winston Salem — The Georgetown Hoyas shot the lights out during a 94-77 exhibition win over Wake Forest in Winston-Salem on Sunday. Georgetown shot 60% (33-55) from the field and a staggering 55.2% (16-29) from deep. Newcomers Vyctorius Miller, Chol Machot, Jaland Lowe, Elmarko Jackson, and Josiah Parker all delivered strong performances in their unofficial Hoya debuts. Returning juniors Kayvaun Mulready and Caleb Williams were both instrumental to the Hoya victory as well. While the Hoyas undoubtedly have several things to clean up before non-conference play begins, Georgetown fans should be excited about the new look Hoyas.

Beyond the Washington Beltway: A Look at the Orioles 2027 Season
By Stan Kay|November 5, 2026

A year ago, it was the Baltimore Orioles who made a huge splash in free agency and bagged one of the biggest names in free agency: Pete Alonso. The optimism was on high. Orioles' owner, David Rubenstein, increased the payroll to nearly $180 million, a record amount in the history of the franchise.
The disappointment is that the money spent didn't translate to wins, yet, Alonso was the star of the team and a legitimate MVP candidate. To finish in fourth place in the AL East with a frustrating 79-82 campaign, the Orioles had to sell-off at the trade deadline and parted ways with the previous face of the franchise, Adley Rutschman. With some credit to President of Baseball Operations Mike Elias, he crushed it on that trade with the Red Sox. Short term pain for long term gain. That is good news for the future as those…
